My Creative Process

Using a photograph or watercolor for inspiration, I create a rough sketch of the subject on background fabric, I individually cut and layer small pieces of fabrics, holding them temporarily in place with a small amount water soluble, clear glue.  When I’m happy with the piecing, I overlay colored tulle (fine netting); the color of the tulle can either blur or highlight features of the subject. The collage is layered with thin cotton quilt batting and backed with unbleached muslin. Free stitching, matchstick quilting (closely-spaced parallel lines of stiching) or a combination of the two enhances the image with texture. Completed works are typically windowbox framed to allow the final texture to shine.
